Handbook

As a student representative of LUS, you represent all students at Lund University. This means that you should represent the students' collective opinion and not your personal opinion. As Lund's students is a constantly changing group, this also means that the students' opinions may sometimes vary. To help you understand how to anchor the opinion you represent and how to conduct yourself in meetings, LUS has written a handbook for student representatives. It includes explanations on your role in LUS as well as in the body in which you represent the students, and it also provides a good summary of different resources that may be of help to you.

What is a Student Representative?

LUS appoints student representatives for university-wide bodies, LUS internal positions, and for some other bodies. As a student representative, you are a full member/representative of a body and participate in meetings that affect both large and small issues within the university. Being a student representative for LUS means that you have a great chance to influence the decisions that are made and that you are a very important link between the students and the university. Being an elected member of LUS also means that you represent all students at Lund University, regardless of their education. As a representative, you can be elected as an ordinary or an alternate member of the body. You can read more about this on the page about Student Representatives.

What do the Students Think?

The easiest way to find out what the students think is to research what LUS has said in the past by viewing and reading LUS Position Statements and Referral Responses & Opinions. If something is unclear, or if the texts do not cover a particular issue, you can contact LUS Presidium.

Rights of Student Representatives

As a student representative, you have the right to receive all documents in time for the meeting and to have access to notes and minutes from the meeting. You may also receive help and advice from LUS Presidium and raise an issue for discussion in Ordförandekollegiet. If meetings with your body clash with compulsory elements of your course, as a student representative you also have the right to make up for this element of your course at another time. For more information on your rights, please refer to the Handbook.

Obligations of Student Representatives

Student representatives also have some responsibilities. Once you have taken up a position of trust, you are obliged to represent the views of all students, to attend the meetings with your body, or to let us know if you cannot attend and then contact your alternate. You must also notify both LUS Presidium and the chair of your body's meetings (see below) if you resign your position or change your email address. You should also arrive on time for meetings and stay well-informed. LUS Regulations  provide more details about your responsibilities as a student representative and you are encouraged to read them or the handbook summary to find out more.

What Should I do During a Meeting?

As a student representative in LUS, you will be involved in meetings dealing with topics that affect the whole, or large parts, of the university. There are a number of things that a student representative should do before, during, and after such a meeting. To name a few, you should be prepared by having read the documents and arriving on time. It is also a good idea to take your own notes at the meeting and review the agenda items afterwards to see if anything needs to be relayed to LUS and the student unions.

In the bodies you will sit as a member, which means you have the right to vote when decisions are made and the student vote is very important in such matters. Don't be afraid to speak up, and believe in yourself!

Again, we encourage you to read the Handbook in its entirety and do not hesitate to contact LUS Presidium if you have any questions.
