CHAPTER 1 SECTION 4A THE SWEDISH HIGHER EDUCATION ACT
Student Representatives
One of the main responsibilities of LUS is to carry out student political work at a university-wide, municipal, and regional level. In order to carry out this political work, LUS needs to be represented in a variety of bodies. This is done by appointing student representatives to these bodies. A student representative is a student at Lund University who is elected to represent the common student voice in a particular body. A student representative has an active dialogue with LUS to discuss what the common student voice is on various issues. In this way, all students at Lund University can be represented in a body, even if only one student attends the body's meetings.
Where to Find Student Representatives?
At Lund University, there must be student representatives in all decision-making and preparatory bodies. LUS appoints student representatives to bodies at a university-wide, municipal, and regional level. The faculty unions appoint student representatives at faculty and department level at Lund University. Among the student representative positions that LUS appoints are the University Board and the university-wide committees and councils. In addition, LUS appoints student representatives to more specific bodies that are of interest to the students of more than one faculty. Examples of such bodies are the Sustainability Forum and the MAX IV Board. In addition to student representatives, LUS also appoints people to organisational positions within LUS, such as LUS Presidium, Board and Nominating Committee. All bodies to which LUS appoints student representatives are listed here.
How are Student Representatives Appointed?
A student representative is appointed by the student unions at Lund University through an election organised by LUS. Any student at Lund University can apply to become a student representative. Elections for student representative positions for the coming financial year are held in May and elections to fill vacancies can take place during the course of the financial year. Read more about the election process on the page Become a Student Representative.
What are the Responsibilities of a Student Representative?
The main task of a student representative is to present the views of students at meetings of the body to which the representative is elected. In order to do so, a student representative must read the documents sent out for meetings with the body. If a student representative does not know what the students' opinions are on an issue to be discussed in a body, the representative should contact LUS Presidium for help in raising the issue with the unions. Contact with the Presidium is made via email to lus@lus.lu.se. Before doing so, the student representative should check if there is any information about the students' views on the issue in any of LUS' policy statements. The statements can be found here. Once the student representative has ascertained the students' views on the matter, it is important that the representative is active in the meeting with the body to ensure that the views are put forward. After the meeting it is also appreciated if the student representative reports what has happened to LUS and the unions. This is done by emailing a written report to lus@lus.lu.se.
The term of office of a student representative normally runs from 1 July to 30 June. A student representative is expected to work actively within the body to which they are elected throughout that period. At the end of the term of office, a student representative should prepare for another person to take over the position in the following financial year. This is done by writing a testament and conducting an oral handover to the person elected to take over the position.
More about what it means to be a student representative and tips on how a student representative hands over their position for the following financial year can be found on the page The Handbook.
